Health Care Levy Relief in Danger
A $200 dollar a year saving promised to families in the May Budget is in
jeopardy with the Opposition today set to vote down changes to the Medicare Levy
surcharge which penalises people without health insurance.
The senate's Greens and Independents refused to say if they would support the
changes that insurers claim would add 5 per cent to the cost of health insurance
cover.
Primie Minister Kevin Rudd claimed any defeat of the measure would be a "slug on
families" robbing them of more than twice the $563 savings they received from
the latest interest rate cut.
The RBA provides relief of nearly $600 a year for families with an average
mortgage, and the Liberal Party of Australia will take that back with spades,"
Mr Rudd told Parliament.
But Opposition health spokesman Joe Hockey said if the move went ahead there
would be a mass exodus from Health Insurance funds, pushing up the cost of cover
